What is an EV ?

The difference.

EV setup

EV setup

An electric vehicle or EV is a car that has an electric motor instead of internal combustion. Instead of petrol it runs on electricity supplied via a bank of batteries. To recharge, just plug into a 24v outlet at night.

The motor within an EV is vastly different to an internal combustion engine. It has only one main moving part and needs no lubricating or regular maintenance. The two bearings on the main shaft of the motor will need to be replaced in 8 to 10 years as well as the brushes if any depending on ware. A DC motor has all of its power at zero rpm meaning takeoffs are quick and in Sparky, is done in second gear. As a matter of fact because Sparky's DC motor is most efficient (90%) at 4500rpm and the speed limit in suburban Sydney is 50 to 60km second gear is all that is required for normal day to day travel.

Lithium-ion and lead acid batteries

Lithium-ion and lead acid batteries

Convert ur car offers many choices and ratings with our two main battery types. Lead acid is the cheapest but they are very heavy and need to be maintained. A lead acid setup is worthwhile in a small vehicle where a range of only 40 or 60km is needed daily. A lead acid setup will last between 3 to 5 years and possibly longer with battery management and adequate care. Lithium-ion on the other hand is serviceable in not only lower range applications but also ranges up 150km in a small car and over 200km in extreme cases. Lithium-ion is roughly twice as expensive as lead acid however it’s a battery that needs no maintenance, is sealed, is half the weight of lead acid, and will last 8 to 10 years if proper care is used.

Recharging is easy

Recharging is easy

Recharging an EV is easy, just plug it in to a standard 240v 20amp socket. In fact with lithium that’s all you need to do to maintain the propulsion system of your vehicle for the next 10 years. Plug it in at night for off peak power, no fuss and the bonus of the 240v socket is that they are everywhere! If you’re running low on power and stop off at a friends house plug in for an hour or two for some extra range.

What cars can be converted?

Convert Ur car can transform virtually any vehicle into an EV from hatchbacks to trucks but what do we recommend? An efficient EV starts with a light frame like a hatchback or small sedan. Heaver cars reduce ranges substantially. However vehicles designed for weight bearing such as Utes can produce extraordinary ranges and still perform as a work platform.
